The Safety of Step Stool

2022-07-15

Step stool is a small portable ladder with flat steps that can be folded with its own support.  All steps can be climbed because the upper handrails are continuous (see photo).  This type of step stool is used for equipment, shelves, cabinets, etc. in indoor areas.

For safe use of step stools, users must observe the following precautions:

  • Make sure step stools are used horizontally and all four feet have solid floor support.  Step stools should never be placed on boxes or other unstable bases to gain extra height.

  • Make sure the step stool is fully open and lock the pedal.  Do not use in half open position.  Make sure the locking mechanism is engaged.

  • Always check the footstool before using it.  Check for damaged/missing parts, condition of skid feet, and condition of climbing/clamping surfaces.  If any damage is suspected, stop using the footstool immediately and report to the supervisor.

  • The skid feet at the bottom of the side rails of each bench must be intact.  Do not use step stools on smooth surfaces.

  • Always face the step stool when ascending or descending.

  • Set steps that are close to the work being performed.  Practice with your body near the middle of the step.  Prevent tilting due to too much protruding from the side.
